Today when someone wants to create a new product with aluminum he is often overtaxed. Filtering the relevant information from technical literature in the available time is a major problem. Access to the information is no longer the point. The problem lies in locating and screening the criteria to meet individual levels of understanding. With this in mind, special effort has been given to the concept of ALUSURF, which provides an overview of the numerous possibilities of aluminum surface treatment. It describes the corresponding treatments, simultaneously identifying additional information sources in scientific literature or contact addresses in science and industry.

The functional elements of the program are user-friendly. The user can expect the following:

- continual orientation during the entire program

- additional information concerning videos, animations, pictures and specific words

- rapid access to corresponding literature

- capacity for note taking, setting markers, collecting and storing information for personal use.

Of course all textual material can be printed.

Initial use of ALUSURF begins with a brief animated introduction. For quick and easy access to the information the options are:

- linear systematic: In textbook fashion, the information is divided into chapters and subchapters. The user clicks on the titles until he finds the desired page/s, which are well structured and specially prepared to read on screen.

- problem oriented: The user defines the surface properties his product requires. The more properties he defines reduces the number of suitable treatments. Clicking on a treatment he jumps directly to the corresponding chapter. The selected choice of properties stays in the memory allowing the user to return to it at any time for comparison with other treatments.

- individual-sequential: The user knows the name of a treatment or a corresponding catchword. He can enter this, or click on it in a list and go immediatly to that the page in the system.

There are yellow pages for contacts with project partners and industries. These pages are linked to the specific information when possible and relevant. A symbol appears on the corresponding page to indicate which address he can refer to.
